SEIU Maryland/DC State Council Endorses Laruby May For Ward 8 Council

Washington, D.C. – Members of the Service Employees International (SEIU) Maryland/DC State Council today announced their endorsement of LaRuby May for the Ward 8 Council seat. Workers were excited by May’s passion to focus support around efforts to reduce poverty.

“LaRuby May agrees that with so much wealth in the District, no one should have to work multiple part-time jobs to make ends meet,” said Jaime Contreras, 32BJ SEIU Vice President and Capital Area Director. “As Council member, she will help reduce income inequality in the District by helping low-wage workers get access to full-time hours.

“With the uncertain future of one of the area’s largest employers – United Medical Center – as well as other possible development, it is critical that Ward 8 has a strong voice for working families on the City Council,” said Patricia Lippold, Vice President of 1199SEIU.  “LaRuby May is a proven leader who can provide that strong voice.”

In addition to a direct mail program, union volunteers will knock on doors and make phone calls on May’s behalf.

The SEIU Maryland and D.C. State Council represent nearly 45,000 members in the areas of health care, public services, education, property services and the non-profit sector who are united to help improve the workplace and lives of not only SEIU members, but working families across the region. With 2.1 million members in Canada, the United States and Puerto Rico, SEIU is the fastest-growing union in the Americas.
