Washington, DC– Members of the Service Employees International (SEIU) Maryland/DC State Council today announced their endorsement of incumbent D.C. City Council members Marion Barry, Muriel Bowser and Jack Evans’ reelection campaigns. Private security officers and commercial office cleaners recognized their work to improve life for working families by raising wage and industry standards.

“These Council members have a long track record of protecting District workers and tax dollars,” said Jaime Contreras, State Council President and 32BJ SEIU Capital Area Director. “Hard-working men and women can count on them to ensure our tax dollars support the creation of good-paying jobs.”

To guarantee that District residents receive quality services for their tax dollars and that workers get good jobs, the SEIU has pushed the District to adopt strong responsible contracting criteria.

“We look forward to working closely with these Council members as we fight to maintain United Medical Center as a full service acute care hospital east of the Anacostia River,” said Pat Lippold, Vice President for Political Action at 1199 SEIU United Health Care Workers East.

The SEIU Maryland and D.C. State Council represent nearly 45,000 members in the areas of health care, public services, education, property services and the non-profit sector who are united to help improve the workplace and lives of not only SEIU members, but working families across the region. It includes 32BJ SEIU, Local 500, 1199 SEIU UHE, Local 400 PG, Local 722, and SEIU NAGE 5000.

With more than 120,000 members in six states, including 15,000 in the D.C. Metropolitan Area, 32BJ SEIU is the largest property service workers union in the country.
