Baltimore, MD –32BJ SEIU and 1199SEIU, which collectively represent over 30,000 property services workers and health care workers in Maryland, announced their endorsement of Anthony Brown’s campaign for Maryland Attorney General today. Union volunteers will knock on doors, make phone calls and speak out within their communities in support of Brown’s campaign.
“I’m honored to receive the endorsement of the hardworking members of 32BJ SEIU and 1199 SEIU,” said Congressman Anthony Brown. “SEIU members care for the sick, keep our communities clean, and were on the front lines of pandemic. I stand with them and will continue to be their champion in the Maryland Attorney General’s office, fighting for fair pay, fair benefits, the right to organize, affordable health care for all, and economic and racial justice.”
“Anthony Brown has fought for workers’ rights throughout his career in Annapolis and Washington, D.C.,” said Lisa Brown, Executive Vice President for 1199SEIU Maryland. “In Congress, he has been an important ally of organized labor, making it a priority to give workers more power to organize, while holding employers accountable for violating their employees’ rights. As attorney general, he will be a strong supporter of our efforts to protect and expand workers’ rights and build a stronger economy for all Marylanders. 1199SEIU is proud to endorse him to be Maryland’s next Attorney General.”
“Anthony Brown’s long track record speaks for itself, from pushing minimum wage increases to helping federally contracted janitors win back wages and benefits from unscrupulous employers,” said Jaime Contreras, Executive Vice President of 32BJ SEIU, the nation’s largest property services workers union. “It’s clear that workers can continue to count on him to enforce laws protecting them and hold bad actors accountable as Attorney General.”
Among his many accomplishments cited by the unions, Brown has helped improve wage and benefit standards for contracted BWI Airport workers and Baltimore security officers.
With more than 175,000 members in 12 states, including over 10,000 in Maryland among the 20,000 in the D.C. Area, 32BJ SEIU is the nation’s largest property service workers union.
With over 450,000 caregivers, 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East is the largest and fastest-growing healthcare union in the nation. The 1199SEIU Maryland/DC Division represents over 10,000 members who work in major academic medical centers, hospitals, long-term care facilities, and community-based organizations in Baltimore, Washington, D.C. and throughout Maryland.
