BABCO BUILDING SERVICE WORKERS IN JERSEY CITY AND HOBOKEN STRIKE TO PROTEST YEAR PLUS OF UNFAIR LABOR PRACTICES

Workers allege Babco Service LLC engaged in unfair labor practices at worksites, including unfair” termination of Javier Amador

Jersey City, New Jersey—Babco building services workers announced a strike on January 9 in response to the company’s alleged unfair labor practices. In September 2021, Babco LLC became the cleaner’s employer for a residential complex in Jersey City at 70-90 Christopher Columbus Drive. Earlier that year, 32BJ SEIU began meeting with cleaners at two buildings in the residential complex. The same month Babco LLC took over the cleaners’ contract at 70-90 Christopher Columbus Drive; the company terminated Javier Amador. Amador claims that his termination followed several supervisors discovering his organizing activity. His termination also followed an ultimately successful effort, assisted by 32BJ SEIU, to enforce the standard wage rule, an effort that resulted in the awarding of roughly $400,000 to workers. 32BJ SEIU subsequently filed an Unfair Labor Practices charge against Babco LLC regarding Amador’s termination.

“Today’s strike comes more than a year after Javier Amador’s termination and the start of our fight against Babco LLC,” said 32BJ SEIU New Jersey District Leader Luz Garate. “Since we started, we have filed an Unfair Labor Practices charge to fight Javier’s termination. Thanks mainly to Javier and other workers’ incredible commitment to enforcing the Jersey City standard wage ordinance, we have won roughly $400,000 in pay. These workers showed their power then, and they are showing their power today with this strike.”

32BJ SEIU has made repeated attempts to communicate with the owner of Babco LCC but has yet to receive an official response.
