32BJ Statement on Gig Worker Rights in NYC

The following statement can be attributed to Kyle Bragg, president of 32BJ SEIU, the largest property service union in the country and member of New York City’s Do It Right Employment Classification Test (DIRECT)  a coalition coming together with misclassified workers, consumers, organizers, advocates and lawyers to fighting to pass a similar ABC test bill called the Fair Play in Employment Act for New York:

“As the California Assembly gets ready to pass Assembly Bill 5, we celebrate the efforts of drivers, nail salon workers, dancers and app workers nationwide and look forward to passage of similar bills elsewhere, including in the Empire State.

In New York, we desperately need a more vigorous, preemptive approach to addressing the worker misclassification that’s hurting our communities. We’ve seen employers’ rampant manipulation of our state’s tests for determining worker status hurt workers in nearly every industry. This problem robs workers of basic labor standards at the expense of local communities and small businesses that follow the law.”
