NEW YORK— The largest building service union in New York today announced that it is endorsing Mark Levine for Manhattan Borough President.

“Throughout his career as an advocate and City Council member, Mark Levine has supported 32BJ members and the issues they care about, so we are proud to endorse him for Manhattan Borough President,” said SEIU 32BJ President Kyle Bragg. “As chair of the Health Committee, Mark worked closely with 32BJ to call on the city’s big hospital networks to make healthcare costs more transparent and accountable. He also supported fast food workers as they fought for a union and improved workplace conditions, as well as in their struggle to hold corporate giants like Chipotle accountable through health and workplace safety policies.”

The union also announced its endorsement of Mariya Markh for City Council in District 48 in Brooklyn.

“Mariya Markh has the experience to get things done in the city, and our members are confident she will be a valuable member of a worker-centered City Council, along with other candidates 32BJ is supporting,” said Bragg. “We are proud to endorse her to fight for workers in Brooklyn and in the rest of the city.”

In New York, SEIU 32BJ represents 85,000 essential workers who are a majority Black, Brown and immigrant, including airport workers, security officers, building cleaners, doorpersons and school cleaners who have been on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic for a year.

The union’s members have been hit hard during the pandemic with thousands living in the city’s highest concentrations of COVID-19, while serving the city’s most prominent businesses. Thousands were laid off and the union reports over 150 deaths.

With 175,000 members in 11 states and Washington DC, including more than 85,000 in New York City, 32BJ SEIU is the largest property services union in the country.
