NEWARK, NEW JERSEY— The members of SEIU 32BJ, the largest property services union in the country, today announced endorsements for 11 members of Congress in New Jersey.
“This year’s historic general election is coming up fast in a few short weeks, and as essential workers who have risked their lives every day during the pandemic, our members support leaders who have fought to keep them safe, and candidates who will fight for them and for all of New Jersey’s working families,” said SEIU 32BJ Vice President and New Jersey state director Kevin Brown. “Our members want candidates who will stand up for them in our nation’s capital and protect the health and livelihood of essential workers, stand up for Black Lives, Dreamers and TPS holders, and advance a pro-worker agenda for our country and for our state. That’s why they voted unanimously to endorse Amy Kennedy for CD-2, a former teacher and a progressive advocate who has a demonstrated commitment to policies that will protect working families.”
The union endorsed the following candidates:
US Senate
Senator Cory Booker
US Representatives
Rep. Donald Norcross (NJ-1)
Amy Kennedy (NJ-2)
Rep. Andy Kim (NJ-3)
Rep. Frank Pallone (NJ-6)
Rep. Tom Malinowski (NJ-7)
Rep. Albio Sires (NJ-8)
Rep. Bill Pascrell (NJ-9)
Rep. Donald Payne (NJ-10)
Rep Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11)
Rep. Bonne Watson-Coleman (NJ-12)
“I am deeply honored to be endorsed by the members of SEIU 32BJ in my bid to represent New Jersey’s 2nd Congressional District,” said Amy Kennedy. “For decades, 32BJ has been a leader in the fight for progressive causes, from the effort to guarantee a $15 minimum wage to the passage of paid sick leave legislation. I look forward to working togehter with 32BJ members towards our shared goal of affordable healthcare, good paying jobs and a livable wage for all workers in South Jersey.”
The union represents about 13,000 members in New Jersey, who work as residential porters, doormen and women, office cleaners, security officers, airport wheelchair attendants, school food service workers and other building service jobs.
Members of 32BJ are participating in a program to register thousands of member voters on National Voter Registration Day on September 22, and throughout the week, as part of SEIU’s largest-ever voter engagement program to expand the electorate by turning out infrequent Black and Latino voters. The $150 million campaign combines digital organizing tools with traditional methods to connect with voters, including a robust paid media strategy in multiple languages, and is expected to reach more than six million voters in eight key battleground states, where member volunteers will engage both union members and non-members.
The deadline to register to vote in New Jersey — online, by mail or in person — is October 13, 2020.
Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, 2020.
