BOSTON—On Friday, December 6 at 12pm, the janitors, security officers and airport workers of 32BJ SEIU will hold a press conference and rally announcing the union’s support of Senator Markey in the upcoming U.S. Senate race.  They will be joined by Senator Markey and Vice President of 32BJ SEIU Roxana Rivera. Tom McKeever, the political director of SEIU Local 888, will also speak on behalf of that local about their support for Senator Markey.

This announcement follows a rigorous endorsement process, in which 32BJ members interviewed both Senator Markey and Representative Kennedy, and carefully considered which candidate will be the best choice for Massachusetts. Workers determined that Senator Markey has a proven track record of standing with communities and working families across the Commonwealth and beyond, including championing the Green New Deal and climate justice, standing strong against the Trump administration’s relentless attacks on immigrants, and fighting for better jobs and union rights for contracted workers at Logan Airport.

“The 20,000 workers of 32BJ SEIU have spoken: Senator Ed Markey is the best candidate to represent the great state of Massachusetts in the U.S. Senate,” said Vice President of 32BJ SEIU Roxana Rivera. “Throughout his time in office, Senator Markey has been a champion on the issues that matter most to our membership. He has advocated for immigration reform, fought alongside Logan Airport workers for union rights, fair wages and an end to wage theft; and been a strong advocate in our push for back pay for our contracted federal workers who didn’t receive compensation following the government shutdown. As a union composed primarily of the communities most impacted by climate change—black, brown, and immigrant working families—we also value his big, bold action plan for good, union jobs in the burgeoning green economy, and are proud to make this announcement as thousands of young people across the world stand together in a climate strike. As we approach the 2020 Presidential election, we need strong champions like Senator Markey fighting with us for justice.”
