NEW YORK—32BJ members on Monday announced endorsements for progressive candidates running for key seats in the New York State Senate. Members will be getting out the vote for these candidates as part of their work to push the Democrats to a majority in the Senate.
Union members endorsed Todd Kaminsky for re-election in State Senate District 9, Adam Haber in District 7, Ryan Cronin in District 6, George Latimer in District 37, Terry Gipson in District 41 and Sara Niccoli in District 46.
Democrats need to pick up four seats in November to control the Senate. With this in mind, the union will be focusing much of its campaign efforts in Nassau County and the Hudson Valley, where high turnout in a presidential election year is likely to help down ticket Democrats.
¨32BJ members are supporting candidates who are a new class of progressive leaders with fresh energy to take on issues that affect working people, low-income New Yorkers, students, immigrants and everyone fighting for a brighter future in New York,” said 32BJ President Hector Figueroa. “With the energy we’re seeing from our members and our progressive allies, we feel confident we can take back the Senate in November.”
32BJ members know their endorsed candidates will not only champion workers’ rights in Albany but also fight for racial and social justice and passage key legislation, including the DREAM Act and NY Renews.
With 155,000 members in eleven states and Washington, D.C., including 80,000 in New York City, Long Island and the Hudson Valley, 32BJ SEIU is the largest property service workers union in the country.
