New York –32BJ SEIU members today announced their endorsement of Pamela Harris for the New York State Assembly seat representing Brooklyn’s 46th District and Barry Grodenchik for the New York City Council seat representing District 23 in Queens.
“Pam earned our endorsement because of her dedication and commitment to service in her community, including her leadership as executive director of a community-service nonprofit and her work to rebuild her community after Hurricane Sandy,” said 32BJ President Hector Figueroa. “We look forward to helping elect her in November and working with her to advance a working families agenda in Albany.”
Harris, a Coney Island civic activist, is a retired New York City correction officer and the founder of Coney Island Generation Gap, a nonprofit group that provides programs for young people.
“Barry is a lifelong Queens resident who grew up with a deep understanding of the concerns that working and middle class families face in New York,” said Figueroa. “We look forward to helping elect him in November and working with him on legislation to support working families in the City Council.”
Grodenchik has a long history in public service, currently serving as Director of Community Boards for Borough President Melinda Katz. In Queens, he has worked to keep hospitals open and fund senior centers, parks and libraries and helped drive the creation of new schools to ease overcrowding.
With more than 145,000 members in 11 states, including 70,000 in New York City, 32BJ SEIU is the largest property service workers union in the country.
