NEW YORK – Members of SEIU 32BJ celebrated Todd Kaminsky’s win in the special election Tuesday for State Senate in the 9th Congressional District in Long Island. The Democratic Assemblymember has been a strong supporter of issues important to our members, and has supported workers seeking better wages and improved working conditions in New York airports, in fast food and in other employment sectors in the area.
“Todd Kaminsky has an established record as a strong voice fighting to make meaningful improvements in the lives of hard-working Long Island families,” said SEIU 32BJ president Héctor Figueroa. “He fought hard to win the $15 minimum wage for all workers in the state and one of the most extensive paid family leave policies in the country. We know that in the Senate he will continue fighting for all workers in Long Island and New York state, and push back against Republicans and against corruption.”
Over the past weeks, dozens of 32BJ members worked long hours to call and visit the homes of thousands of voters in the district. At the start of the voting day, SEIU 32BJ Secretary-Treasurer Kyle Bragg and Vice President Shirley Aldebol joined Kaminsky and 32BJ members at Kaminsky’s campaign office in Valley Stream to get out the vote.
With more than 155,000 members including more than 2,200 who live and work in Long Island, 32BJ is the largest property service workers union in the country.
