E-Verify Proposal Not Good for Connecticut

“The flawed and onerous E-Verify verification system proposed for Connecticut’s workers and businesses will only make matters worse. It could cause citizens and legal residents to lose their jobs and push undocumented workers deeper into the shadows - benefitting only the most unscrupulous, off-the-books employers,” said Kurt Westby, 32BJ Connecticut Director.

“If E-Verity supporters want to protect workers, they should call on the Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform rather than penalize the hardworking men and women that are already part of our communities.”

With more than 120,000 members in eight states, 32BJ is the largest property service workers union in the country. E-Verify allows employers to run a worker’s information against Department of Homeland Security and Social Security databases. Critics of E-Verify say it is inaccurate and creates hardships for workers and businesses.
