32BJ ANNOUNCES ENDORSEMENTS FOR BROOKLYN CANDIDATES

– Brooklyn Union Members Get Ready to Turn Out the Vote in Upcoming City Elections –

New York, NY – After a membership-driven six month endorsement process involving candidate interviews, policy briefings and a commitment to the union’s “New Deal” policy agenda, 32BJ announced today its complete list of Brooklyn endorsements for the 2009 elections. The most recent endorsement goes to Jumaane Williams, who is challenging incumbent Kendell Steward in Council District 45, which includes Flatbush, East Flatbush and Flatlands.

“New Yorkers need a New Deal – a set of public policies that will help create good jobs and keep our City vibrant and affordable,” said Mike Fishman, President of 32BJ. “These candidates have demonstrated both the leadership and the commitment to make this City work for working families.”

The union also announced its endorsement of Mayor Michael Bloomberg for re-election citing his record on creating good jobs, support for raising security industry standards and launching a Green Building initiative. This follows the union’s May endorsements of Marty Markowitz for Brooklyn Borough President, eight incumbent City Council members from Brooklyn and City Councilman Bill de Blasio for Public Advocate.

In May, 32BJ announced endorsements for incumbent City Council members Letitia James for Council District 35; Albert Vann for Council District 36; Erik Martin Dilan for Council District 37; Sara M. Gonzalez for Council District 38; Mathieu Eugene for Council District 40; Darlene Mealy for Council District 41; Charles Barron for Council District 42; Vincent J. Gentile for Council District 43 and Domenic Recchia for Council District 47.

In the 34th Council District, which includes Williamsburg and Bushwick, Brooklyn and Ridgewood, Queens, 32BJ is endorsing Maritza Davila, who is challenging Councilwoman Diana Reyna. For open seats, 32BJ is supporting Steve Levin for Council District 33 and Brad Lander for Council District 39.

As part of its ongoing political program, 32BJ intends to mobilize thousands of members to turn out Brooklyn voters in support of these candidates for the City’s primary and general elections.

With more than 70,000 members in New York City, including close to 13,200 who live in Brooklyn, 32BJ is the largest property service union in the country.
